Licence and computers

One licence, unlimited sites, a seat per computer. What the key does, how the app checks it, and what happens offline or when a subscription ends.

Activating

Paste the key from Polar's email on the activation screen. The app sends the key and a fingerprint of this computer to the licence server, which answers with a signed lease. The lease is stored on this computer and checked by the app itself against a public key compiled into it; nothing about your sites is sent, only the key and the fingerprint.

Computers, and seats

A licence covers one computer. Each further computer is a seat: €5 a month, added or removed from the customer portal Polar linked in your purchase email, and it takes effect on the next activation.

Moving to a different machine costs nothing. Open Licence from the app menu on the old computer and press Deactivate this computer; that frees the seat for the new one. If the old computer is gone or will not start, the customer portal can release the seat instead.

A seat is a computer, not a person. Two people who never use the app at the same time still need two seats if it is installed on both machines.

Offline

The lease is renewed in the background about once a month while the app is open, and it allows fourteen days offline inside that. A laptop on a long trip keeps working; a subscription that was cancelled stops once the last lease runs out.

When the subscription ends

The app returns to the activation screen. Your backups are unaffected: they are ordinary files in the backup folder — an archive, its checksum, a manifest — and can be extracted with any tool that reads tar.gz. See what a backup contains.

Finding your key again

Polar's confirmation email, or the customer portal it links to. If neither is at hand, use the contact form and give the address you bought with.
